Umrah for First-Timers: The Complete 2026 Checklist

guides

I still remember my first Umrah — standing before the Kaaba, heart pounding, forgetting every dua I'd memorised. If this is your first time, this Umrah checklist will make sure you arrive prepared, so that moment belongs entirely to you. And a fair warning before we start: the paperwork end of Umrah changed in 2026 more than it had in years, so even cousins who went "just last Ramadan" may be describing a process that no longer exists. This is the current file, checked and rechecked, written for the pilgrim doing this for the first time.

The 30-second version: Passport valid 6+ months, Umrah visa via a licensed operator enrolled with Pakistan's Ministry of Religious Affairs — the visa fee itself is SAR 300 plus mandatory medical insurance (roughly SAR 100-180 by age), bundled into package pricing in Pakistan, with straightforward files processed in 24-72 hours once your Nusuk-registered hotel booking (with its Booking Reference Number) is in place. Vaccinations: ACWY meningitis at least 10 days before arrival, and for Pakistani passports specifically, the polio certificate — OPV issued 4 weeks to 6 months before arrival, or IPV within 4 weeks to 12 months. Download Nusuk before you fly for permits. Carry riyals in small notes, buffer days in the itinerary, and ihram you can carry onto the plane. The rest of this guide is the detail.

Start With the Paperwork — the Version That Applies Now

Get this right and everything else falls into place:

  • Passport valid for at least six months from your travel date, with clean blank pages for the visa
  • Umrah visa — as a Pakistani you apply through a licensed travel operator, not directly at the consulate; the operator files through the official Nusuk system
  • A confirmed Nusuk-registered hotel booking — since the 2026 rules, every Umrah visa application, single or multiple entry, must be linked to a confirmed hotel and transport booking through Nusuk, with a valid Booking Reference Number (BRN), before the visa can be issued
  • Meningitis (ACWY) vaccination certificate — mandatory, received at least 10 days before arrival in the Kingdom
  • Polio vaccination certificate — mandatory for Pakistanis specifically, because Pakistan remains on the WHO's polio-endemic list (the exact windows are below; do not skip this)
  • Confirmed return ticket and, if travelling as a family, your FRC — the Family Registration Certificate smooths border questions about who belongs to whom
  • A couple of passport-size photographs — an old habit that still comes in handy

Two things worth knowing about the visa itself in 2026-27. First, the classic single-entry Umrah visa covers one trip with a stay of up to about 30 days within its validity window. Second — and this is new — Saudi Arabia introduced the one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa in July 2026: valid 365 days, repeat entries allowed, with a pooled 90-day total stay across the year and a fresh Nusuk package required for each entry. If there's any realistic chance of a second Umrah within the year — many families now time a winter trip and a Ramadan trip on one visa — the multiple-entry option deserves a conversation with your operator before you file. Our full one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa guide unpacks how the 90-day pool works.

Sorting visas, flights, and hotels on your own — especially from the UK, Canada, or the Gulf — can get overwhelming quickly. That's where a trusted agency like HTG Travels (htg.com.pk) genuinely earns its keep. WhatsApp them at +92 317 5054959; it's the fastest way to reach them, and replies usually come within minutes.

The Vaccination Rules — Read This Part Twice

The general rule and the Pakistan-specific rule are different, and mixing them up is the most common paperwork failure I hear about at first-umrah gatherings.

Meningitis ACWY applies to every pilgrim from every country: one dose, at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia, recorded on a certificate you carry (physical or uploaded per your operator's process). If you had ACWY for a previous Hajj or Umrah, check whether your certificate is still inside its accepted validity — the vaccine's protection window is measured in years, not months, so an old certificate may already cover you.

Polio applies to travelers from polio-endemic countries, and Pakistan is on that list. The accepted windows: an oral polio vaccine (OPV) certificate issued between 4 weeks and 6 months before arrival, or an inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) certificate issued between 4 weeks and 12 months before arrival. Translation: take the certificate too early and it ages out; leave it to the last week and it's too fresh. The sweet spot is about five to six weeks before departure — one clinic visit, one certificate, both problems solved. Municipal vaccination centers in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and every major city issue these on the spot; take your passport and keep the yellow booklet with your travel documents, not in the checked bag.

Health & Insurance

Beyond the mandatory vaccines, I'd add the seasonal flu shot — you'll be shoulder-to-shoulder with pilgrims from every corner of the world, and the Haram's marble floors are washed and walked by millions. Carry your medicines in original packaging with prescriptions, and don't skip travel insurance; the Kingdom's rules require medical cover as part of the visa bundle, and a good policy covers far more than the minimum. A friend of mine sprained his ankle on the Haram's marble floors, and insurance turned a nightmare into a minor errand.

If you're walking with elderly parents, read our gentle Umrah with elderly parents guide before booking anything — the hotel distance to the Haram matters more than the star rating, and wheelchair arrangements are worth planning rather than improvising. And if it's your first time flying with a baby, our Umrah with infants guide covers lap fares and strollers on the Haram's floors.

What to Pack (and What to Leave Behind)

  • Ihram — two white unstitched cloths for men; loose, modest clothing or an abaya for women. Pack ihram in your hand luggage if you'll be changing at the Miqat or in transit — checked bags and pilgrims part ways sometimes
  • Unscented soap and deodorant — no perfume once you enter ihram; check that "unscented" label at the shop, not at the airport
  • Slip-on sandals — you'll remove your shoes for every single prayer; backless is the rule for men in ihram anyway
  • Belt bag or phone pouch — men in ihram have no pockets, but money and documents still need a home; a shoulder-cross body bag is the pilgrim's uniform for a reason
  • Light layers — Makkah afternoons are hot; Madinah evenings can surprise you; and air-conditioning in hotels and the Haram is serious
  • Type G adapter — the same three-pin plugs used in Pakistan and the UK
  • Refillable bottle — cold Zamzam water fountains are everywhere
  • Painkillers, plasters, lip balm, saline spray — the desert air is drier than you'd think, and the walking volume is a blister factory
  • A small Quran or dua book you can hold one-handed — phones die, batteries drain, and pages never do

Leave the perfume and half your wardrobe behind. You'll live in ihram and abayas, and you'll walk more than you ever have. Our full Umrah packing guide goes item by item if you're the kind of pilgrim who checks lists twice — you should be.

Learn the Rituals Before You Land

Umrah itself is beautifully simple: Tawaf, seven circuits around the Kaaba; Sa'i, seven walks between the hills of Safa and Marwah; then Halq or Taqsir, trimming or shaving your hair. Memorise the Talbiyah before you fly — I practised mine on the plane like a nervous student, and hearing thousands of voices join in at the Miqat (the boundary point where ihram begins) still gives me goosebumps. If you want the full ritual walkthrough with the duas at each stage, our step-by-step Umrah rituals guide is the one to read on the flight.

Also download the Nusuk app before you fly, and create your account with your passport details. It's where you book a Rawdah visit in Madinah, check current permit requirements for prayers in the Haram during peak times, and carry your digital permits. First-timers consistently underestimate this: the Rawdah (the Prophet's ﷺ mosque garden between his pulpit and his resting place) is visited by permit only, slots release in windows, and they go fast in season. Our best Umrah apps guide reviews what's actually worth installing.

Money & Timing for 2026-27

Carry Saudi Riyals in small notes — trolleys, tips, and shoe racks add up — though cards work almost everywhere now. A realistic daily envelope: modest if your package covers meals, generous if Makkah's biryani counters are doing their job on you.

On timing, the honest hierarchy for a first trip: the weeks just after Ramadan are the quietest and cheapest of the whole year; winter (November-February) is the kind-weather season and the busiest family window from Pakistan; Ramadan itself is the most electric and most crowded time of year — book months ahead and accept that the reward and the crowd are the same thing. Our cheapest Umrah months guide has the month-by-month math, and if you're travelling when schools break, the December Umrah school-break guide and the winter packages by departure city guide are worth their weight in riyals.

And build in buffer days. Rushing your Tawaf because the flight leaves tonight is stress you don't need on your first Umrah; a lost buffer day in Madinah is the mildest tragedy in travel.

One more tip from experience: let a desk lock in your flights early even if everything else isn't final. HTG Travels holds live fares on Jeddah and Medina routes from Pakistan, the UK, and the Gulf, and their air ticketing team will match the fare rules to your dates so a moved plan doesn't cost you the ticket — our PIA vs Saudia vs Airblue vs Air Sial comparison explains why that choice matters more on this route than anywhere else. WhatsApp +92 317 5054959 before you book anything else.

A Note for Women Travellers

The rules have genuinely eased over the last few years: women over 45 can travel in licensed groups without a mahram, and the relaxed policy has continued into the current season; women under 45 travel with a mahram or an organised group per the standing rules. The full detail — including what documentation a mahram relationship needs — lives in our Umrah without a mahram guide. If this is your situation, settle it with your operator before the visa is filed, not after.

FAQ: First-Timers Ask, and Honestly Should

How long does the Umrah visa take from Pakistan? With complete documents — passport, certificates, Nusuk-linked booking — straightforward files process in 24 to 72 hours. The realistic bottleneck is assembling the file, not the processing; our Umrah visa processing-time guide covers express routes and honest timelines.

What does the Umrah visa cost? The government fee is SAR 300 plus mandatory medical insurance of roughly SAR 100-180 depending on age; in Pakistan this is almost always bundled into package pricing, so ask your operator for the itemised version, not just the package total. Our Umrah package quote decoder teaches you to read those quotes line by line.

Can I book my own hotel and still get the visa? The hotel booking must be Nusuk-registered with a valid BRN — a random booking that isn't in the system won't unlock the visa. This is one of the places a licensed operator saves you from discovering the rule the hard way.

Can I go twice in one year? Yes — that's what the one-year multiple-entry visa (introduced July 2026) is for: repeat entries within 365 days, a pooled 90-day stay across the year, a fresh Nusuk package per entry.

Which city should I arrive in — Jeddah or Madinah? Both work; the choice shapes your first 48 hours and your route between the two cities. Our Madinah-first or Makkah-first guide makes the case for each.

What if I make a mistake in a ritual? Don't panic, don't redo blindly — ask, and know the common mistakes in advance. Our Umrah booking mistakes guide covers the planning-side errors; for ritual questions, ask a scholar or the muallim at your hotel rather than the loudest voice in the lobby.

A Thought From the Heart

As we prepare for journeys of faith, let's keep the people of Palestine and Sudan close in our hearts. They are enduring hardships no family should ever know. May Allah grant them relief, safety, and dignity, and may our prayers — and whatever support we can offer through trusted humanitarian efforts — reach them. Keep them in your duas, always.

Final Word

Your first Umrah doesn't need to be flawless — it needs to be yours. Sort the paperwork early, take the polio window seriously, pack light, learn the rituals, and leave room for the moments no list can capture. And if the planning feels heavy, HTG Travels (htg.com.pk) handles Umrah packages, visas, flights, hotels, and complete travel planning — my own parents book through them now. Visit htg.com.pk, email htghuzaifa@gmail.com, or message +92 317 5054959 on WhatsApp, and make this year the year you finally go.

When you make it to Makkah, say a little prayer for me too.
